Read Around 4th January,2012
As outside the wind whipped across Scotland, inside, in a warm cosy convivial atmosphere, club members’ creative writings were being appraised and appreciated. This was a follow on meeting from 7th December 2011.
We were split into groups of four and given other people’s work to read. The material was anonymous so we could concentrate on the words on the page and later give feedback on first impressions and ways we thought the writing could be improved. The pieces reflected the composition of members of the club, in that it was eclectic and covered a broad spectrum.
In my group there was a factual article, fantasy fiction and some short fiction stories. All of which showed original thinking and hard work. I had submitted a short piece of fiction and held my breath when it came to be reviewed by other groups. The critics were kind, they always are, but the feedback was very constructive and helped me re shape the work.
I am a new member but right from the “get go” I was made to feel at home. It is obvious that there is some real talent in the room but the members are modest and self-effacing. They take their work seriously but not themselves. The Wednesday meetings provide the best laugh I get all week.
If you have an interest in creative writing and would like some company and encouragement then the AWC is the place for you.
